One of West Virginia's most beautiful courthouses is having a birthday today.
The historic Wirt County courthouse will be celebrating its centennial starting at 11 a.m.
The guest speaker will be Joseph N. Geiger, Jr., Director of the Archives and History section of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.
The celebration will be accented by the patriotic sounds of the 249th Army Band of the West Virginia Army National Guard.
The 249th band will be doing a pre-show musical performance starting at 10:30 a.m. and later will perform during the actual ceremony.
The ceremony, which will last about 45 minutes, will be open to the public and is free of charge.
A rain location has been established at the high school auditorium. Hope you can make it out on May 28th!
The ceremony will conclude with guests having a unique opportunity to participate in a centennial group panoramic photograph taken by former military photographer - Bo Wriston.
The courthouse was built by the B. F. Smith Fireproof Construction Company in the Neo-Classical Revival style of architecture.
Commemorative items depicting the century old courthouse will be available for purchase. Items include a Centennial Celebration Collector's Basket and note cards that can be purchased and taken to the Elizabeth Post Office to be hand cancelled with a special commemorative postmark.
