Calhoun County High School juniors, Samantha Fulks and Jordan Mace, have been selected to attend the 2011 American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Rhododendron Girls State to be held June 12-17 at Wheeling Jesuit University.

Samantha is the 16 year old daughter of Glenn and Trevia Fulks of Millstone, WV. She is a member of the varsity softball team and 'Learn and Serve.' Samantha plans to pursue a career in criminal justice.

Jordan is the 16 year old daughter of Karen Mace of Grantsville, WV. Jordan is a member of 'Learn and Serve,' HISTA, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, 4-H, Peer Mediation, and varsity volleyball. She volunteers at the Calhoun County Library and for Energy Express. Her future plans are to attend Marshall University. Jordan stated, "It means a lot to me to be selected to attend Girls State because I am broadening my knowledge of politics and am interested in learning about the court system."

The American Legion Auxiliary hopes that each young female attending Girls State will return to her community a better citizen and that she has acquired a desire to demonstrate this fact by her willingness to make greater civic contributions. The ALA desires to create more than just a passive interest in the actuarial study of government.

The Auxiliary strives to create an interest that will be born of the desire of knowledge. Girls State impresses upon the young women the glorious traditions which have made this country what it is today. The ALA attempts to accomplish this in ways aimed at bringing the girls into the realization of how wonderful it is to be an American. The ALA aims "To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the Community, State and Nation" and "To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of Justice, Freedom and Democracy" Participants of Girls State are eligible for various scholarships provided by the American Legion Auxiliary.
