SUNDAY HUNTING ON 35 COUNTY BALLOTS - Residents Divided On Issue

(05/13/2002)
The issue whether to permit Sunday hunting could bring out some extra voters to this year's primary election tomorrow. The West Virginia Farm Bureau is opposing the passage, but many hunters and gun right's groups are supporting the passage. Most states have Sunday hunting. West Virginia is among the last to make it legal.

Most business groups feel it will help the economy, and working hunter's have expressed their desire to have time on Sunday to hunt with their children.

Church and religious groups have opposed Sunday hunting, related to the sanctity of Sunday, or having time away from hearing gunshots in the woods.

DNR officials have reported few problems with recent Sunday hunting, which has been in effect.

The issue got on the ballot in 35 counties because wording was confused in a bill passed by the legislature.
