Calhoun's relatively new multi-million dollar army reserve center at Big Bend may be
on the list for closure. Eric Raven, a spokesperson for Sen. Robert Byrd's office said
yesterday, "We have not been formally notified." Raven said Sen. Byrd sent a letter to
Secretary White of the Department of the Army about two weeks ago to clarify the
issue.
Inside sources said the 305th Military Police Company was not getting enough new
recruits from the area, but at the same time said few recruitment efforts had been
made to help the local unit. They said a meeting regarding the closure was held a few
weeks ago.
The source, which asked not be identified, said it is done deal.
Calhoun Commission President Larry McCallister sent an inquiry to Senator Byrd's
office several weeks ago, and has not received a reply.
Senator Byrd's office said they would notify local officials if the Department of the
Army has made a decision.
Numerous efforts by the local VFW post and others to re-name the unit after
Congressional Metal of Honor recipient Bernard P. Bell have gone unheeded.
