SUPERINTENDENT PROPST ASKS SBA FOR $5.5 MILLION FOR ARNOLDSBURG SCHOOL

(03/10/2011)
After Calhoun voters approved a bond issue to build a new Arnoldsburg Elementary School last week, Calhoun Superintendent of Schools Roger Propst appeared before the WV School Building Authority yesterday, seeking funds to help with the project.

The SBA heard requests from 28 state counties for financial support for school building and improvement projects.

Propst was asking for $5.5 million to help the county build a new school at Arnoldsburg.

"We want to construct a new pre-kindergarten through 4th grade elementary school out of the flood plain to replace a building of 1951 construction that's been flooded at least five times and nearly flooded many more," Propst said.

Each county had ten minutes to present their projects and convince SBA members why their project should be funded.

Propst says he's very hopeful they'll get their money because, just last week, the county passed a $2.8 million bond to help pay for the project, according to MetroNews.

"They seem to be impressed with the fact that we not only passed that bond but we passed it with 67% favorability. With an 18.3% unemployment rate in Calhoun County, we're very, very proud of that," he said.

The SBA will make an announcement regarding their funding decisions next month.
