Occupant credits smoke detector and dog for saving his life

By Bob Weaver

A sixty-year-old Pine Creek man Dale McFarland was awakened by a smoke detector about 4 a.m. Monday, and managed to get out of his burning dwelling with his dogs.

The Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department brought the fire under control, but the dwelling was a near total loss.

McFarland, who is handicapped, said the fire started near a hot water heater.

When firemen arrived, McFarland was attempting to re-enter the house to obtain some belongings, saying one of his dogs prevented him from going back in the house.

"If it hadn't been for the smoke detector and my dog, I might not have made it out," he said.

The Upper West Fork VFD responded to a mutual assistance request.

The structure was located on the Upper Pine Creek Road near Hur.
