Glenville State College's Lady Pioneers (22-8), seeded third coming into the annual WVIAC Basketball Tournament, will face top-seeded
University of Charleston (24-6) today at 6:30. )
The conference rivals met twice during the regular season, trading wins. In the initial contest GSC won 15; more recently the loss was only by five.
Concord was coming off a huge upset win over #2 seed West Liberty,
meeting the Lady Pioneers in semi-final play Friday afternoon.
From the start of the clock the pace was fast, furious and play was
rough. There was little doubt both teams came prepared to fight
to the end.
Glenville jumped out to an early lead, doubling Concord's scoring
efforts in the first seven minutes 20-10. The next seven minutes
was a mirror of the first and with two-thirds of the period gone it
was 41-20 in favor of GSC.
By the half the Lady Pioneers put 60 points on the board and went
on to become the first women's basketball team in WVIAC history
to break the 100-point ceiling during tournament play winning
with a 23-point advantage 110-87.
Kenyell Goodson played an inspired game helping
to more effectively mix up both moving the ball
and scoring. She had 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Five Lady Pioneers scored in double-figures, led by Tenisha Wilson
with 20. Autumn Davis had 18, Mishae Miles scored 17 on her way
to racking up another double-double with 12 rebounds. Kenyell
Goodson had one of her best games with 13 points and six rebounds.
Kim Stephens had 10.
Autumn Davis wasn't about to let go of this
loose-ball, almost getting pulled off her feet
in the process. The play was consistently rough.
Miranda Reed led the team in steals with 3, secured the game high
11 assists, grabbed 4 rebounds and scored 7.
During a brief press conference following the game Lady Pioneer
Coach Bunky Harkelroad said the team had "stepped up" and
has confidence they'll do their best against Charleston.
"I'm really proud of our kids."
On the good days Harkleroad said they tried to wear down
opponents, both physically and mentally. In the case of UC
"they can run with anyone in the country."
