WRESTLERS IN STATE TOURNEY CONTRACT SKIN HERPES

(03/05/2011)
West Virginia health officials are warning that wrestlers who competed in the recent state tournament could have been exposed to skin herpes.

Several cases of the disease have been reported.

The Bureau for Public Health says at least five members of a high school wrestling team contracted herpes gladiatorum.

The agency has not released the name of the school, although it is located in central West Virginia.

The highly contagious virus is spread by skin to skin contact.

The symptoms include lesions on the face, head and neck. The virus is the same strain that causes cold sores.

The warning is for wrestlers who participated in the state tournament from February 24th through the 26th in Huntington and the regional tournaments held the week before.

Coaches and physicians are being urged to report new skins herpes to their local health department.
