CHIP HEALTH COVERAGE EXPANDED TO WV KIDS

(02/28/2011)
West Virginia's Children's Health Insurance Program board members have raised income eligibility to 300 per cent of the federal poverty line, making a considerable number of new children eligible for the health coverage.

This weeks decision raises the maximum income for a family of four to $66,150.

Chief Financial Officer Stacey Shamblin says CHIP's budget was about $47 million in 2009.

CHIP serves West Virginia children from infants to to age 19.

Most of the CHIP money goes to outpatient services, doctor's visits and prescription drugs.

CHIP will include the change in its plan that's submitted annually to the Legislature.

The actual expansion will start on July 1.
