It is good to win when you play bad.
That pretty much sums up the Calhoun Middle School's 24-19 victory at Doddridge County Tuesday night.
The Red Devils, 7-5, had some clutch free throw shooting in the fourth quarter to hold off DCMS as Tyler Gerwig and Tyler Sims combined to make all five fourth quarter points, which proved to be the difference in the game.
On the other hand had Calhoun made some of its free throws earlier those fourth-quarter shots would not have been nearly as clutch. As it was Calhoun hit on six of 22 free throw attempts, The Red Devils were equally as tepid from the floor as they managed just eight of 31 field goal attempts.
Doddridge may have helped Calhoun's cause late in the game.
Dylan Hayes canned a three-point shot to cut into Calhoun's lead early in the third quarter and DCMS kept bombing away from outside despite having no success. Doddridge missed its last 10 three-point attempts and was one of 15 from beyond the line.
Sims led Calhoun with eight while Tyler Tanner added seven and Gerwig six to go along with his 14 rebounds. Sam Brady added three points to the cause while grabbing five rebounds and three steals as he played a strong defensive game.
Lucas Wilson, Kirkland Allen, William Baker and Luke Sheldon all played but did not score.
Hayes had nine to lead DCMS, 3-7, while Drew Lett added eight.
Going into the B game CMS and DCMS had a combined record of 0-20.
Now Doddridge is 1-9 while Calhoun is 0-12 following the Bobcats' 26-17 victory.
Doddridge took a 17-5 halftime lead as Calhoun's offense sputtered. But in the second half the Red Devils rallied and had DCMS on the ropes before faltering.
Nick Watkins led the way with seven points while Robbie Lamp added four points and 13 rebounds. Ethyn Miller and Dustin Turner chipped in with three each. Christopher Kirkland, Riley Cain, Austin Bailey, Justyn Starcher, Nick Murphy, Kyle Farrell and Jerry Jones all played but did not score.
For DCMS Jordan Baldwin led the way with eight.
Calhoun returns to action Monday night with a makeup game at Ritchie Middle School.
