DELEGATE WALKER'S LEGISLATIVE REPORT

(01/25/2011)
David Walker (D-Clay)
House of Delegates
WV Legislature-District 33

The House began this week by joining together in prayer and celebration to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We have continued to be productive, making an addition to the Ethics Act and passing another bill that would require public servants to disclose additional information on financial disclosure statements.

In other news, I am pleased to announce that I have been appointed Vice Chair of the Committee on Agriculture. This is a subject that is very close to my heart and I am excited to begin working on legislation that will help improve our agricultural industry.

With the passing of our beloved Senator Robert C. Byrd, we have chosen Joe Manchin III to take his place in Washington, leaving an empty seat for our governor. Since then, Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, has been acting as governor for our state. Confusion over what should happen next led us to the doors of the Supreme Court to determine whether or not an election should be held.

It is with great appreciation that I report that the court has chosen to uphold the constitution of this state and called for the election of a new governor before Nov. 15th. Our constitution states that an election is the correct way to choose and it is our duty to ensure that one is held so that the people can decide who they wish to represent them.

As our second week comes to an end, we are determined to achieve our goal of improvement for West Virginia. We are hard at work to do what is best for West Virginians, and that has begun with the decision of the Supreme Court to support your constitutional rights and give you the opportunity to participate in the election of our next governor.
