50 out of 55 counties in West Virginia have trout fishing opportunities. Unfortunately, Calhoun County is one of the five counties without trout fishing opportunities.
We now have an opportunity for change.
Around twenty years ago, the Calhoun County Park was stocked with trout by members of the park, providing a fishing opportunity.
This allowed money to stay inside the county instead of going to other counties with trout fishing opportunities. Surely, some of these fishermen bought gas, snacks, or bait inside the county while fishing.
Fishing is an activity enjoyed by millions of Americans. Youth benefit greatly by having a safe, entertaining form of recreation that can be shared as a family. Fishing opportunities have been proven to stimulate local economies.
These trout will be strictly put and take. The water temperatures attained during the summer are too high for trout survival.
A stocking will likely take place in March to allow the majority of fish to be caught out by June.
With appropriate funding, we hope a percentage of this stocking to include brood trout.
These trout are larger fish of four pounds plus. West Virginia fishing regulations of 6 fish per angler per day will apply.
It would be nice to have a youth fishing derby as a grand opening.
Many areas of the state have such events. Getting youth involved in outdoor recreation should be a responsibility of every outdoorsman in an effort to pass it down.
This stocking will be contingent of receiving the appropriate amount of donations.
The goal is currently $1000.
The project is endorsed by the park board.
