Glenville State College
Glenville, WV - Glenville State College was recently named a 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Host Campus by West Virginia Campus Compact, a coalition of 27 colleges and universities dedicated to increasing collaboration and service between colleges and communities.
The Host Campus distinction includes two $250 mini-grants, funded by North Carolina Campus Compact and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
"Host Campuses will be using mini-grant funding to honor Dr. King by meeting community needs, making Martin Luther King Day a day of service rather than leisure," states Franchesca Nestor, Director of West Virginia Campus Compact.
Glenville State College will be using its mini-grants to implement two important service projects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 17, 2011.
The first part of the program will serve veterans in Glenville and surrounding communities. Volunteers will work from the Mollohan Campus Community Center Ballroom to assist veterans in applying for benefits. Experts from the Department of Veterans Affairs and from the Clarksburg VA Medical Center will be available to provide information. The goal is to make sure that veterans in the Glenville community know what benefits they are eligible to receive and to assist them in any application processes, so that these veterans get the benefits they need and deserve.
The second service project will be performed by Glenville State College Hidden Promise Scholars, Hidden Promise mentors, and members of the Glenville community. These volunteers will be going out into the community to perform small home repair projects and general cleaning for elderly citizens of Gilmer County. Glenville State College is working in conjunction with Community Resources, Incorporated (CRI) to identify and implement the small projects.
If you or someone you know is elderly and is need of some help around their house or is in need of assistance with minor home repairs, please call Joanne Stewart at CRI (304) 462-8698 to give a description of your project. Calling in with a project does not guarantee that it will be accepted and completed. The deadline to submit projects is Friday, January 7, 2011.
