Charleston, W.Va. - Stewart Fitzwater, a senior at Calhoun County High School, has received a $1,000 college scholarship through the Students of Excellence program, which is sponsored by EQT Corporation and The State Journal, a statewide business and leadership publication, in partnership with the Higher Education Policy Commission.
Stewart is one of 55 students selected this year to receive the grant, according to Christa Hamra, general sales manager for The State Journal. The Students of Excellence program recognizes high school seniors in each of the state's 55 counties who have worked to support their schools through their volunteer work, entrepreneurial spirit and leadership.
The son of Bruce and Amy Fitzwater of Mt. Zion, WV, Stewart plans to attend the University of Charleston where he will seek a doctorate in pharmacology. He was recently selected to complete an internship through Minnie Hamilton Health System where he works closely with their professionals in the various departments of pharmacy and medicine.
"EQT thrives on innovation and we have always valued and supported education, so participating in programs that blend the two, like Students of Excellence, is a natural for us," said Pam Coates, community relations manager for EQT. "We've already taken a leadership role in the natural gas industry, especially here in West Virginia, and it makes sense that we would participate in a big way to help students throughout the state take advantage of educational opportunities that will help them grow and thrive right along with us."
"We are grateful to EQT for recognizing and rewarding these outstanding young West Virginians," Hamra said. "The Students of Excellence program recognizes students who are making their marks in their schools and communities, and we are delighted that the Students of Excellence program will help them pursue their college education."
The State Journal published a special section December 3rd to recognize the scholarship recipients and joined with EQT to recognize the students at a reception at the Culture Center at the state Capitol complex in Charleston, December 12th.
