The numbers tell the story in Calhoun Middle School's 36-22 loss Tuesday night.
The numbers:
- Calhoun was five of 28 on two-point field goal attempts.
- Calhoun was three of 10 of three-point attempts.
- Calhoun was three of 16 on free throw attempts.
- Three Calhoun starters fouled out as the team was called for 19 total fouls.
Looking at the numbers one looks for a silver lining.
Usually that silver lining is the rationalization that "nobody got hurt" but even that rationalization was shattered since super sub William Baker suffered an injured wrist.
Actually, with the exception of the Calhoun girls team beating Walton 25-24 on a last second basket by Nikki Yoak in the first game of the tripleheader, the only good news was that the guys involved in a yelling and shoving contest after the game were both from Walton.
It was one of those nights.
Calhoun was led by Tyler Sims with seven points. Tyler Tanner added six and Sammy Brady five, before fouling out.
Fouls were a big part of slowing Calhoun on both ends of the floor especially since leading rebounder Tyler Gerwig picked up three fouls in the first quarter and added his fourth with 2:53 remaining in the second quarter. He spend the majority of the game on the bench before finally succumbing to fouls with 3:50 remaining in the contest. His numbers were a very un Gerwig-like two points and seven rebounds.
Defensive demon Lucas Wilson also fouled out of the contest. Before he did he had two points, three steals and nine rebounds.
Baker, Luke Sheldon, Ethyn Miller and Dustin Turner all played but did not score.
The loss drops Calhoun to 2-4 on the season heading into Thursday night's home contest against Ritchie.
Walton, 2-2, was led by Alex Ashley with 12. He had 22 in Walton's earlier victory over the Red Devils. Alex Paualok added 10 and Cory Crihfield nine.
In the B game Walton the Tigers David Wolfe had 11 steals (Walton had 19 overall) and 10 points to lead his team to the 37-10 victory.
Calhoun, 0-6, was led by Miller with five. Jerry Jones and Nick Watkins had two each while Dustin Turner and Chris Thornton had one each.
Christopher Kirkland, Riley Cain, Justyn Starcher, Bobby Lamp, Austin Bailey, Nick Murphy and Kyle Farrell all played but did not score.
Lamp was the leading rebounder with six while adding three steals.
Calhoun was nearly blanked in the first half and only scored at the final buzzer when Thornton was fouled and made a free throw. Walton led at that time 18-1.
