UPDATE - Charleston Area Medical Center said Monday night that Karen Pickering, struck by a vehicle at Big Bend Sunday afternoon, has been released from the hospital. 12/20/2010 - A 44-year-old Big Bend woman was struck by a vehicle about 2 p.m. Sunday, sending her to Minnie Hamilton Health System. Karen Pickering reportedly suffered injuries to her lower extremities, and was later life-flighted to a Charleston hospital. Charleston Area Medical Center reported Sunday night she is under evaluation. Pickering was in the middle of Route 5 near Holbert's Store when emergency personnel arrived, she was covered with blankets and being assisted by neighbors.

Woman collapsed near centerline Neighbors at the scene said they had earlier expressed fear that the woman would be struck, reportedly because of a tendency to be walking on the highway. One report said the driver of the vehicle was traveling a moderate speed. The WV State Police are investigating. In another incident Calhoun EMS transported a 17-year-old male to Minnie Hamilton Health System from Steer Creek, Sunday, who had ingested multiple over-the-counter medications.
