With thousands of young men and women in the U. S. Armed Forces unable to travel home for the holiday season, AmeriCorps members from The American Red Cross recently collaborated with local schools on a project to show U. S. service members how much we all appreciate and miss them.
Holiday Mail for Heroes is a national program designed for schools and youth organizations. Children who participate in the program make or purchase holiday cards to send to military personnel overseas.
Calhoun County American Red Cross AmeriCorps members Megan Healy-Bleichner and Michelle Jones teamed with Pleasant Hill Elementary School, Arnoldsburg Elementary School and Calhoun Middle High School in the program. Many creative youngsters contributed their talents to making and preparing cards, and on December 1 the cards were shipped to Maryland to be sent overseas.
The postage costs for the program were made available thanks to a donation made by Parson's One Stop. The American Red Cross would like to express its gratitude to Paul Parson and his family for contributing to this project, as well as all the young people who contributed holiday cards and the schools that allowed them to participate.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer to help with providing services such as these to the U. S. Armed Forces can contact Michelle Jones or Megan Healy-Bleichner at (304)588-0717, or visit the American Red Cross office, located at the Grantsville Courthouse Monday or Tuesday from 10 to 2 - or contact Janet Leasure at (304)485-7311 for more information.
