Bernard "Tom" Sturm, 90, of 107 Arnold Drive, Powells Point, NC died Wednesday, December 1, 2010 in the Sentara Barco Nursing Facility.
He was born July 25, 1920 in Millstone, West Virginia to the late Mallie and Florence Elliott Sturm.
Mr. Sturm retired after 35 years as a well-tender for Consolidated Gas Company and was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Mt. Zion, WV. He was an US Army veteran having served in World War II in the 94th Signal Battalion at the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Sturm is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet Stump Sturm; two daughters, Scarlett Mowrey and husband, Richard, of Powells Point and Jackie Butler and husband, Ronald, of Princeton WV. Also, surviving is his twin sister, Bernice Hawkey of Ripley WV; three grandchildren, Adam Butler, Colby Butler and Mark Mowrey.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Lucas Butler, three sisters, Eleanor Boyles, Azeline Hersman, and Margarete Morgan; two brothers, Otho Sturm and Holden Sturm.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the Powells Point Baptist Church by Revs. Herbert A. Hemmingway and James Clark. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the Powells Point Baptist Church and at other times at their residence, 107 Arnold Drive, Powells Point NC.
The family suggests memorial donations in memory of "Tom" Sturm be directed to the National World War II Museum, 945 Magazine Street New Orleans, LA 70130.
