Two new AmeriCorps women have been assigned to Calhoun to implement and strengthen the program for the American Red Cross.

AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.

Megan Healy-Bleichner of Five Forks and Michelle Jones of Brohard have established an office in the Calhoun courthouse and are looking at establishing an office at the Upper West Fork Park.

During their one year assignment, they are working on providing a number of Red Cross training opportunities, including first aid/CPR training.

Jones said they are working on strengthening volunteer disaster relief teams and organizing a Red Cross Club at Calhoun Middle-High School.

Bleichner said efforts will be made to improve emergency responses to help county citizens.

The Red Cross/AmeriCorps office is located in the basement of the courthouse. Their phone number is 304-588-0717.
