Shelley Moore Capito R-W.Va. is seeking her sixth term as a member of the United States Congress. She currently represents West Virginia's Second Congressional District and is running against progressive political activist and Democrat Virginia Graf in the Nov. 2, 2010, general election.
Capito is the only member of the West Virginia legislative delegation to vote against Obamacare, Cap and Trade and the assorted stimulus packages proposed by President Barrack Obama.
She has been endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, West Virginians for Life and the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Businesses).
The national and state Republican Party sought to have Capito run for the vacant U.S. Senate seat when Robert C. Byrd died, but she declined saying she had made a commitment to the people of the Second Congressional District to serve that district.
She would have probably been the opponent to Democrat Gov. Joe Manchin in this fall's election. Manchin decided to forgo his commitment to the final two years of his term as governor to seek the vacant senate seat.
Capito serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the House Committee on Financial Services where she is the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Development.
She also serves on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.
Capito co-founded the 81-member Congressional Coal Caucus. Capito is Co-Chair of the Long-Term Care Caucus and is a member of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues, Steel Caucus and Sportsman's Caucus.
Capito graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in Zoology, and also holds a M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. She is married to Charles L. Capito, Jr., and they have three children.
Capito is the daughter of former West Virginia governor and congressman Arch A. Moore.
