STATE WILL AUDIT PUBLIC EDUCATION IN WV

(10/15/2010)
The State of West Virginia will start auditing its public school spending later this month.

The audit will focus on the WV Department of Education, county school systems and the Regional Education Service Agencies (RESA).

West Virginia is among the states with the worst educational outcomes.

Public education is the state's largest budget item, and will consume about half of this year's $3.7 billion general revenue budget.

The audit will cost at least $300,000, with findings to be presented to the 2011 legislative session.

The WVEA suggested an audit, as did the West Virginia Federation of Teachers.

That group agrees with the spending focus, but also wants such subjects examined as the need for 55 school boards.
