Dancin' the night away, to cheers and jeers
It was a hoot and holler Friday night at the second annual "Womanless Beauty
Pageant" held at Calhoun Middle/High School, sponsored by "Heaven's Helpers," a
Relay for Life team at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
Despite the serious nature of raising money for the American Cancer Society, the
plugs were pulled and nervy men donned female attire before a packed crowd, who
laughed and roared at the performances. It has become one of the best attended
affairs, with WVRC radio personality Toby Wagoner giving it special energy.
The highlight of the evening was the crowing of the new 2002 "Queenie Weenie,"
selected by a panel of judges, including Al Sergi, Danny Finch and Sherry Beall, with
auditors Angie Hersman and Neva Bailey.
The Soggy Bottom Boys escape from the holler
Cheryl Jarvis sings "You Light Up My Life"
The "Hee Haw" Girls perform comedy
Minnie's Mice sing "Where Oh Where Are You Tonight"
The new "Queenie Weenie 2002" was Curvy Curttina, dazzled the judges and inspired
the crowd by vamping among them. Second runner-up was Teenie Tanya and first
runner-up was Luscious Leslie, their real names to be divulged by word-of-mouth.
Cancer survivor Faye Fitzwater took time to tell the audience about her two bouts
with cancer, and how the disease affects most families, sooner or later. Fitzwater
encouraged everyone to participate in Relay for Life this year.
In addition to the "girls" performing customary acts associated with beauty
pageantry, the crowd enjoyed some outstanding entertainment provided by the
wonderful voices of Cheryl Jarvis and Amy Collins, the Soggy Bottom Boys, Minnie's
Mice and the Hee Haw Girls.
The womanless contestants also performed pageant talent.
Wild Wilda performed a hog calling routine; Irresistible Ida Mae performed a comedy
routine; Sensual Simone sang "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun;" Teenie Tanya played the
mandolin and sang Tiny Tim style; Curvy Curttina sang "What a Girl Wants"; Maunakai
shimmied her hula dance through the audience; Foxy Roxy read a brilliant original
poem "I writ it myself" and Miss Ellie sang "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My
Man."
The Relay for Life "Heaven's Helpers" team expresses their deep appreciation to the
community for supporting this event.
