WV LEADS NATION WITH DEER-VEHICLE COLLISIONS

(10/07/2010)
West Virginia still leads the nation in deer and vehicle collisions.

With the the annual deer rut season underway, the numbers will continue, especially at dusk and dawn.

While fall is the high risk time, in recent years deer in Calhoun appear to be in the highway frequently, all months, all times of the day.

There could be some relief from collision this winter, since the mast crop is good and deer might not be crossing the highways as often searching for food.

Last winter, the mast crop was declared the worst in 30-40 years, and some deer died of starvation.

About every Calhoun driver has several recalled tales about deer encounters, some of the worst have been reported on the Herald.

Other states making the Top Ten, South Dakota, Iowa, Montana, Michigan, Wyoming, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Mississippi.

Car-deer collisions rose by 7% in 2009.
