Saturday night paid off for the youth involved in the first Calhoun County 4-H & FFA Youth Livestock Show and Sale.
By all accounts the most expensive market hog ever sold in West Virginia was sold in Calhoun County on Saturday evening. The one market hog shown at the event brought $22.25 per pound. At 190 pounds, that one animal brought over $4,200. The generous purchaser was Dan Cain of Cain's Veterinary Clinics.
The entire sale raised $30,669.50. Most of those funds will be paid out to ten of the eleven exhibitors who decided to sell their animals after the animal placement and showmanship shows held Saturday, September 25 during the WV Molasses Festival. The entire community was very generous at this first youth livestock show and sale in Calhoun County. The livestock program received $5,891.18 from community donations and a four percent sales commission to ensure the continuation of the program for next year.
