CALHOUN KIDS HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE PROBLEMS - CHIP Program Has Helped

(04/19/2002)
While most West Virginia children have some sort of health insurance, there are pockets of kids in West Virginia who lack coverage, according to West Virginia University's Institute for Public Health. About 30,000 kids were without coverage, during 2001, according to the study, which surveyed 16, 000 households.

Calhoun County was among eight counties that have over 10% of kids without any type of medical coverage.

In all West Virginia counties, most uninsured children lived in families at or below the poverty level, although some children are stuck in "working poor" situations where bread-winners do not have health insurance.

The CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program) and other efforts have greatly helped the problem.
