Wayne Underwood Field, what to do for future use
Surplus property is being sold and disposed by the Calhoun Board of
Education. The current board office on High Street in Grantsville, the old
Grantsville Grade School, was sold Monday at auction to Larry Heiney,
Heiney and Sons for $35,000, and the old Rowel's Run school property was
sold to Frank and Virginia Whytsell for $5,300.
Calhoun Commission President Larry McCallister and Grantsville Mayor Gary
Knight spoke to the board at Tuesday's meeting, wanting to accept an offer
by the board to transfer the property to their entities for continued public
use.
Board President Rick Fitzwater said the school board has three options, to
give the field to the Town of Grantsville or the Calhoun Commission, or sell it
to the highest bidder.

McCallister and Knight both stated the land would be used for recreational
and public use, which was supported by Superintendent Blankenship and
most of the board members.
Fitzwater said he felt the property should be given to the county, since the
school board is a county-wide endeavor and "Everyone would be served."
Mayor Knight disagreed, stating the town is in the black and has resources
to maintain the property. He felt the county would not be able to maintain
the property. "It lies in the city limits," he said, and the town would be the
appropriate choice.
McCallister said the Commission would help develop the property, making it
available to Little League teams, the Wood Festival, carnivals, and other
special events. "We could put it under Parks and Recreation," he said. "I
would like to see a walking trail around the field."
Superintendent Blankenship and board members suggested the two
governmental bodies present written proposals regarding the property for
further consideration.
