Ray F. Bennett, 86 of Grantsville, West Virginia, passed away at his home Saturday, August 14, 2010.
He was born July 1, 1924 in Huttallburg, WV and raised in Ansted, WV where he attended Ansted High School. He was the son of the late Samuel and Florina Bennett.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Novella, Beulah and Rosemary and brother James. He is survived by one brother Gene of Maryland.
He was married to Willajean "Jean" Wyant Bennett of Weston WV, who preceded him in death in 2006. They were married 62 years. They had two children, Dennis Bennett (Susan) of Craigsville WV and Becky Wilson (John) of Frederick MD. He had two grandchildren, Derek Bennett (Gina) of Chesapeake VA and Kami Bennett of Indianapolis IN and three
great grandsons, Matthew, Caleb and Seth Bennett.
He worked as a welder in a shipyard in Baltimore MD during WWII. He was a former New York Life Insurance salesman and worked for Westvaco while living in Wyoming. He retired from Hope Gas Co. in 1986 after 30 years of service as a welder. He was also the founder and owner of Bennett and Son Monuments in Grantsville which he started in 1963. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grantsville. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Nemesis Shriners.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Minnie Hamilton Health System in Grantsville, Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston and Camden Clark Hospital and Housecalls Hospice of Parkersburg WV, for the wonderful care they gave. Also, a special thank you goes to Rick D. Sampson, Howard Johnson, Cleston Nicholas, Ritchie Richards, Bobby Keener and other friends for their care, concern and help during his illness. They have been a great support to our family and we appreciate all they have done.
