CALHOUN SCHOOLS WILL LIKELY BAN ELECTRONIC DEVICES DURING SCHOOL DAY

(06/24/2010)
The Calhoun school system is working toward placing limitations on the usage of call phones and electronic devices by students.

They are saying they have "identified a clear and unmistakable correlation between student possession or usage of cell phones and their non-participation in behaviors essential to an optimum learning experience"

Sharon Pitts, Faculty Senate President, spoke at a recent board meeting representing the faculty and administration at Calhoun Middle-High School.

Pitts requested the school board and superintendent support the school's proposal that students no longer be permitted to have possession of any type of cell phone or electronic device during school hours.

"Our intention is to include this policy in our 2010 Handbook," Pitts said, including a ban of such devices as cell phones, iPods, cameras, and hand held video games.

"Success for our students and faculty entails and insists upon certain learning components as focus, concentration, comprehension and application of important skills," she said.

A draft policy will be available to place on comment at the July board meeting.
