SEVENTY GOODRICH EMPLOYEES LOSING JOBS SOON - Complete Shut-Down By September 30

(02/04/2002)
Seventy hourly workers at Spencer's B. F. Goodrich plant have been told their jobs will end by mid June. "The notice was posted on the bulletin board Tuesday," according to Russett resident Michelle Morrell, an employee of the company.

About half of Goodrich's 147 employees are from Calhoun County. The Spencer Goodrich operation, according to the company, is being moved to Phoenix.

The entire facility will be closed no later than September 30, 2002, according to David Stalnaker, operations manager for the local facility.

With a small number of salaried employees already being eliminated, this is the first announcement of the shut-down for the 118 hourly workers.

Local Goodrich workers said they expect to receive a $1000 bonus due them after June 1, part of a company-union contract agreement.

A flyer circulated among workers said a multi-million dollar plant is being constructed in Phoenix to handle a number of facilities that have closed since 9-11.

A few days after the terrorist attack, Boeing, one of Goodrich's biggest customers, announced major cut-backs related to the airline industry.

The shut-down of the Spencer plant, much of which was originally located in Grantsville, was announced last fall.

The plant has manufactured emergency evacuation systems for aircraft. Goodrich is eliminating 2,400 jobs and closing at 16 facilities.
