UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES IMPROVE, BUT...

(05/25/2010)
West Virginia's unemployment rate improved in 54 of the state's 55 counties in April.

The numbers should not be interpreted that employment opportunities are on the upswing, but that those receiving unemployment benefits have likely run out of those benefits.

Workforce West Virginia said that only Pocahontas County recorded an increase in unemployment last month.

Statewide, unemployment fell from 10.1 percent to 8.9 percent in April.

Monongalia County continued to boast the state's lowest unemployment rate at 5.5 percent.

Workforce uses a reporting model that was developed decades ago, and does not reflect an accurate status of unemployment or the economy.
