The Richard H. Gorsuch coal-fired power plant near Marietta, Ohio is being closed by the the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, because it's had a lack of pollution filters since 1991.
American Municipal Power (AMP) has agreed to close the facility after being fined $850,000. The company will also give
$15 million on energy-saving initiatives to its customers.
Regulators have long ignored standards that would have closed the plant years ago.
There should be a significant upgrade to the area's air quality once the plant closes, since the Mid-Ohio Valley makes the nation's list as having high-risk air pollution.
The company supplies power to scores of communities in Ohio and neighboring states.
