WV WAGES LAG BEHIND REST OF NATION

(05/14/2010)
Average weekly wages in all 55 West Virginia counties lag behind the national average.

West Virginia, according to earlier statistics, is near the bottom in the USA with per-capita and median income.

Federal figures released this week shows Boone County leads the state with an average weekly wage of $824.

Wirt County's average weekly wage of $388 is the lowest. Calhoun's average range was in a group of nine counties that have weekly incomes of less than $500 a week.

The national average weekly wage is $840 and the state average is $673.

The figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics are based on data reported by state work force agencies for the third quarter of 2009.

According to the bureau, weekly wages in 23 counties averaged $501 to $600.
