Several volunteers turned out Saturday, May 8, at the Grantsville Community Garden Workday.
West Virginia University Extension Agents Brandy Brabham and Curtis Garretson along with several volunteers worked Saturday to erect three strings of electric fencing around the perimeter of the Grantsville Community Garden.
The garden is located in the grassy area next to Grantsville Manor on US Route 16 where a sign denotes its location. Volunteers also trimmed weeds around the perimeter of the fence to maximize the protection the fencing will provide the garden areas. Gardeners who have leased the plots intend to begin planting after the threat of frost.
Garden coordinators would like to thank to following groups and individuals for their volunteer efforts and use of their personal equipment. Those helping during the workday include Jim Garretson, Tia DeMartino, Bob Williams, Mary Ball, Eloise Prichett, and WVU Master Gardeners Larry Stinn and Lin Williams. Coordinators and gardeners appreciated the use of Dick Ullum's tractor, plow, and disk to work up the garden prior to the scheduled workday and Brian Toney's time and effort in operating the tractor and equipment to work up the garden areas.
Plots are still available for gardeners who would like some of the area for planting their crops for the 2010 growing season. Plots are 12' x 12' or larger, if space is available. There is a $5.00 fee to lease a plot area. Participants have to complete an application and sign a lease agreement to participant in the community garden.
Individuals and/or families that lease plots are expected to keep up with their own garden plots throughout the growing season and participate in scheduled work days set by the garden coordinators. The 2010 garden season will begin on May 1, 2010 and end on October 23, 2010. The application deadline has been extended to June 1, 2010.
