Calhoun's Softball team won the first game of the sectional tournament Wednesday night against Gilmer County.
The final score was 7-5. Calhoun's Taylor Green was the winning pitcher. Taylor surpassed 100 total strike-outs pitched for the season during the Gilmer game.

Taylor struck out 12 during the Gilmer contest and added 6 more against Wirt in the second game bringing her total strike outs pitched to 108 in only 94 innings. Congratulations Taylor!
The Red Devils struggled in the 2nd game of the evening, losing to Wirt County 0-9.
Unfortunately, the 2010 season ended rather abruptly Thursday evening with a 10-5 loss in the Section eliminator game against Gilmer County at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.
Overall, it was a rough season with 4 wins and 14 losses, but the team constantly improved. They made some position and batting order changes at the end of the year and won 4 of the last 6 games.
Taylor Green added 6 more strike outs pitched, to bring her total K's for the season to 114. Not too shabby considering we had 6 games on our schedule that we were unable to make up due to poor weather/field conditions. Taylor was averaging 9 strike outs per game during the last 5-6 games. The Calhoun team strikeout record for pitchers is 139, held by Dani Church (3 times First Team All State).

On a personal note, I have just completed my 12th year as Head Softball Coach. Although I am not a Calhoun High School graduate, I have always been proud to be the Red Devil softball coach. In addition to teaching softball fundamentals and game play, I have tried to impress upon the players that even though events in the game may or may not go the way you'd like, you still have to move on. Let go of the bad, enjoy the good but stay focused on what is at hand and you'll always be a winner.
We've come a long way from my first group of players explaining to me that they had never played in any game that lasted more than 5 innings, to winning two Sectional titles in 2006 and 2007. Other than this year and last year we have played in every sectional title game since this section was formed with Gilmer County and Wirt County High Schools.
We had winning seasons and losing seasons, good times and bad, major distractions, unbelievable plays, to everything else sandwiched in between. I have had so many, many good softball players throughout the years and it has been a pleasure to coach them all. There have also been those few extra special young women that were outstanding players. They donned the Calhoun uniforms and performed at the highest levels bringing honors to themselves and to their school.
So many memories to cherish. I will fondly remember them all, but due to ongoing health and physical problems I will no longer be able to continue the position of head coach. I would like to extend my special thanks to all of the people that helped me during the past 12 years and supported the Calhoun softball team: my family, my assistant coaches, former players, players parents and families, softball fans, high school boosters, bus drivers, and high school/county administrations. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It was an honor to be your coach.
Girls I will miss you most of all, remember the team motto: Swing hard and go far!
