PUBLIC FORUM TONIGHT FOR FUTURE OF CALHOUN SCHOOL FACILITIES - New Arnoldsburg School Key Recommendation

(03/30/2010)
A public forum is set for tonight at Calhoun Middle-High School at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the future of the county's school facilities for the next ten years.

Every ten years each county develops a ten-year comprehensive educational facilities plan [CEFP].

Calhoun Superintendent of Schools Roger Propst says residents of all areas of the county are invited to hear about and discuss the county plan.

The key project that is being recommended is the construction of a new Arnoldsburg Elementary School.

"After looking at the cost of renovating Arnoldsburg Elementary and upgrading the facility to current standards, it is the recommendation of the committee that funding from the School Building Authority be sought for replacing that facility with a new school to be located out of the floodplain," Propst said.

Propst says for several months, Calhoun County's CEFP committee has been working on the plan, encompassing all schools for the 2011-2020 decade.

The architectural and school planning firm of Williamson and Shriver of Charleston is providing professional services for the task.

Propst says, the CEFP committee has identified needs at each of the schools, including a gymnasium at Pleasant Hill Elementary that would eliminate students having to eat in the same facility where they have gym classes. Pleasant Hill's sanitation plant also needs replaced along with other improvements to the buildings and grounds.

Calhoun-Middle High will need roof replacement and mechanical systems upgraded during the 10-year period.

"Please plan to attend and provide input in order for us to plan properly in providing the necessary and appropriate facilities for our children as we help prepare them for life in the 21st century," Propst concluded.
