Calhoun's Senior Center (CCCOA) is exploring the idea of building a fitness center to serve Calhoun families, including youth and seniors.

"The idea is based on a community collaboration that could make it happen," said director Mike Ritchie.

The Grantsville town council has given permission for the CCCOA to complete a site survey and do a feasibility study on a site formerly occupied by the town hall.

The town hall was demolished in 2006, after which the town attempted to build a new town hall building, with a committee making an effort in that direction.

Asst. CCCOA Director Brenda McBride said, "It's important to dream about something the community can do together," indicating efforts will be made to bring together the school system, the hospital, the county commission, the Town of Grantsville and private citizens to move the project ahead.

Willadene Poling, CCCOA Board President said, following the site study, efforts will be made to seek support for the project.

McBride cited a number of rural communities in WV that have built such centers, which often include an indoor pool, aerobic equipment, a meeting room, a basketball court, porches and a coffee shop.

The land would likely be long-term leased, and include the use of the town parking lot.

"Certainly the community needs such a center," McBride said, asking, "Why not us?"
