To date the West Virginia University Extension Service in Calhoun, Kanawha, and Roane Counties only have eight applicants for the Master Gardener training program that was set to take place at the Amma Senior and Community Building beginning Thursday, March 11, 2010.

If enough participants are found, training would be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. beginning March 11 through May 13, 2010. They must have at least ten approved applicants to offer the classes.

There will be a course fee of approximately $70. Participants must complete 30 hours of training, pass an exam, and provide 30 hours of approved volunteer work to become a certified WV Master Gardener.

The training is open to residents in Roane County and all the surrounding counties. The training provides gardeners with the opportunity to improve their horticultural knowledge and skills and then share their experience with the public through organized volunteer activities.

The program topics covered include: botany, plant problem diagnosis, soils, ornamentals, pest management, fruits, vegetables, and plant propagation.
