Kathryn (Nelson) Hamilton, 93, of Wheeling, formerly of Parkersburg, died Feb. 5, 2010, after a short illness, surrounded by her daughters at Liza's Place Hospice Care, Wheeling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Hamilton, in 1962, Hamilton having his roots in Calhoun County.
She was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Parkersburg, the daughter of the late Nellie F. Law Nelson and Brady A. Nelson.
She graduated from Williamstown High School in 1914, was a chemistry major at Marietta College and trained at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg as a medical technologist. She was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. She attended Salem College in Salem, W.Va.
In 1966, she received one of the first grants from the American Cancer Society to attend Ohio State University where she finished extensive training in the School of Pathology Department of Cytology.
She worked in the Medical Laboratory at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta and at St. Joseph's Hospital, Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital and General Consultants, all in Parkersburg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Brady Law Nelson who died in 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge.
Surviving are her three daughters, Julia Linn Haymond and Josephine Tellers (John E.), both of Wheeling, W.Va., and Sarah Jane Kaufmann (John G.) of Bradenton, Fla., and New Matamoras, Ohio; six grandchildren, Julia Paige Browning-Rush, Meredith Browning-Sterling (Michael), Andrew B. Voso (Tiffany), Benjamin J. Haymond, J. Mitchell Tellers (Katherine) and John Hamilton Tellers (Elizabeth); and eight great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Services and interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Riverview Cemetery, Williamstown, W.Va. Arrangements by the Kepner Funeral Home, National Road, Bethany Pike, Wheeling.
