A bill to give authority to county school systems to insure 180 instructional days has been passed by the House and Senate, and will be sent to Gov. Joe Manchin for signing.
The bill will allow county school systems to plan for icy conditions and emergencies while setting their annual calendars.
It allows them to go beyond the late-August to early-June time frame that now governs the school calendar.
While the state's teacher union has been against the idea, most teachers have indicated they believe the measure is good.
