The West Virginia State Police K9 unit searched Calhoun Middle/High School last
Wednesday, but no drugs were found, according to Principal Michael Offutt. Offutt
said this was the third year no drugs were found.
The West Virginia State Police K9 unit conducted the search under the supervision of
the local detachment. Offutt said the State Police have an open invitation to do a
random search anytime. "Individuals are not searched. The building, lockers, locker
rooms, rest rooms, parking lots, etc. are searched," he said.
"When the dogs and their handlers arrive, an announcement is made for all students
to remain in their classroom," he said.
Offutt said classrooms are then picked at random, after which students are removed
from that classroom before the dogs enter the room.
"We are always working to provide the best and safest environment for our youth to
attend school. One of these components is the area to be free from drugs and other
forms of contraband. Dogs provide one avenue for preventing the sale or use of drugs
on school property," Offutt concluded.
