Maxine Smith Powell, 81, of Cutler, Ohio died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 2, 1928 in Grantsville, W.Va. to Clarence S. and Nell M. Holpp Smith.
She was a graduate of St. Marys High School. She was a member of the Dale United Methodist Church and enjoyed raising flowers and gardening. Maxine was a founding advisor to the Palmers Lads & Lassies 4-H Club. She was a youth advisor for many years at Oak Hill United Methodist Church and was active in Oak Hill and Dale Ladies Aid. Maxine and George wintered in Flagler Beach, Fla., for 30 years.
Maxine is survived by her husband, George S. Powell, they were married on Nov. 29, 1946; four children, G. Sam (Sharon) Powell of Stockport, William F. Powell of Cutler, Barbara (Ken) Kidder of Stockport and Daniel J. (Maureen) Powell of Columbia, S.C.; seven grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Louise) Smith of Wartburg, Tenn.; three sisters, Emma J. Garish of Akron, Martha Snyder of Wooster and Madylene (Allen) Hamrick of Parkersburg, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Lester and Pete Smith.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home with Pastor Robin Swinsburg officiating. Friends may call at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Her burial will be in Dale Cemetery. There will be no public graveside service. Following services at the funeral home, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Palmer Community Center.
