RECESSION WATCH: Chevron Pulls Services From 90 WV Outlets

(12/08/2009)
About 90 West Virginia retailers that sell Chevron gasoline will have to find a new supplier come July, 2010.

Chevron has announced it was pulling its name from about 1,100 service stations in West Virginia and a dozen other states.

Some of the outlets include One Stop convenience stores, Par Mar Stores of Parkersburg, Woodford Oil Co. of Elkins and 7-Eleven stores.

Jan Vineyard, president of the West Virginia Oil Marketers & Grocers Association, said "It was done without warning."

Oil companies have cut back on retail operations where profit margins are small.

Reports say the Chevron stations being cut account for about 8 percent of the company's U.S. fuel volume.

The company still has about 5,000 stations in the East.

Several oil companies, including BP, Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips, appear to be moving away from retail operations.
