David Barr Hathaway, 84, of Bexley, Ohio died November 28, 2009.
He was born in Grantsville, West Virginia, December 2, 1924 to Fred S. and Eva Dye Hathaway.
He was preceded in death by sister Virginia Hathaway Kirby and brother Dr. Frederick H. Hathaway.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce, and children Phillip (Angela Bowman), Pam McKinley, Mark (Suzanne Monett), and Rosemary (Tom Bredehoft); grandchildren Brian, Eva, Shan, Justin, and Daniel; and great grandchildren Tamrat and Raphael.
A Purple-Heart decorated WWII veteran, David attended West Virginia University on the GI Bill, where he earned two bachelor's degrees and an MA before moving to Columbus in 1956 to work for the Franklin County Schools. He served first as a school psychologist and later as Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services, retiring after 31 years.
He was a lifetime member of Eureka Lodge AF&AM, Grantsville, WV, and Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus. A consummate musician, David led a dance band during his college years, and was later a member of the Humboldt Glee Club, the Scottish Rite Choir, and the Bexley United Methodist Church Choir. He was recognized several times as the oldest participant at Columbus' Tuba Christmas event.
Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, December 2, at Bexley United Methodist Church, 2657 E Broad St., where the service will be held at 11 a.m. Private interment at Bethlehem Cemetery, Grantsville, WV. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army, the WVU Foundation, or a charity of choice.
