An investigation launched by the Wirt County Commission and the West Virginia State Police in August, has resulted in the arrest Monday night of the county's longtime assessor Debbie Hennen.
Sergeant Aaron Nichols with the Elizabeth post of the West Virginia State Police has confirmed that Hennen has been arrested on misdemeanor charges in Wirt County.
Sgt. Nichols told WTAP-TV he cannot confirm what those charges are, but says that he'll be able to release more information once he consults with the special prosecutor handling the case, Josh Downey of Roane County.
Wirt County officials have remained tight-lipped about the problems.
Prosecutor Leslie Maze, in responding to a public information request in August from the Herald, denied the request questions, but did say, "My office does not possess any writings pertaining to your request that have not been ordered to be kept confidential by the Honorable Robert A. Waters, Judge of the Circuit Court of Wirt County."
Wirt commissioner Charles Murray, also told the Herald in August, "There is an investigation going on," likely related to one or more of Wirt County's elected officials and their records.
Murray said, "Details will come out in a few days. That's all I can say."
The West Virginia State Police have been involved in the investigation, after meeting with county commissioners during several executive sessions.
In August, Wirt County Clerk Suellen Calebaugh said she "could not comment" on the matter and Wirt County Circuit Clerk Theresa Rollins said, "Nothing has come through my office."
