The LK Area Community Foundation has received national recognition - the 2009 "Effies Award" for Community Leadership.
"This is wonderful news for Calhoun and Wirt County, receiving a national award is great affirmation of the time and resources that so many good people here are putting into building our community's foundation," said Jim Bennett, LKACF Board Chairman.
"We're very proud of this 'national pat on the back' but really want to pass it on to all the citizens of our community who are supporting LKACF. This is a great way to celebrate our 5th year of service locally and to acknowledge their support," Bennett said.
Effies are national awards for effective philanthropic practices.
PACF and their Regional Affiliates were commended for "building civic capacity and philanthropy in a smaller, rural, dispersed, economically distressed, and too often forgotten part of the country.
"Our Board is thrilled to receive this national recognition - we want to say 'well done' to our whole region and way to go, Calhoun and Wirt counties," officials said.
In 2009, LKACF completed a challenge grant from West Virginia Grantmakers and the Benedum Foundation resulting in a new LKACF Scholarship Fund and partnership with Calhoun and Wirt County High Schools.
The LKACF had a West Virginia Grantmakers-Ford Foundation grant to develop a new Gilmer County Community Grants Fund.
Foundation Executive Director, Judy Sjostedt, said, "Building endowed community philanthropy is critical to creating opportunities at the local level. West Virginia is one of the most philanthropically under-capitalized states in the nation."
