The West Virginia Farm Bureau filed a petition Thursday asking the court to
order the Department of Natural Resources to reverse its interpretation of
the Sunday Hunting Law. Once it was signed into law last year by Governor
Wise, state officials interpreted it the opposite way because of the
wording.
The Farm Bureau has asked the court to have DNR head Ed Hamrick to
"prove" why his interpretation is correct. The organization also wants to
block the implementation of the law or have Hamrick rescind his
interpretation.
Lee Shoemaker, lobbyist for the Bureau, said Wise's office saw the bill as
allowing Sunday hunting unless it was reversed by the counties.
The lawsuit may be moot in at least 32 of the state's 55 counties. They
already have the issue on their ballots.
DNR's Hamrick said he was surprised at the timing of the lawsuit, since
counties are moving ahead with placing Sunday hunting on the ballot.
