Zoe Powell, age 101 years, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009 after a two-year period of serious decline in health.
Mrs. Powell moved to Roanoke following the death of her husband Thurl Charles Powell in 1987.
She was born in Calhoun County, West Virginia on January 7, 1908 where she lived most of her life. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who steadfastly loved God and the many wonders of His creation , particularly the majestic mountains and streams of West Virginia.
Mrs. Powell is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband, her infant daughter, June; and her son-in-law, Samuel Arnold Hays.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Louise Powell Hays of Roanoke; grandson, Colonel (retired) Mark Warren Hays and daughter-in-law Gwen P. Hays of Salt Lake City, UT; and granddaughter, Rev. Melissa Hays-Smith and son-in-law, Howard Jerome Smith "Jerry" of Roanoke; great grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Chase Purinton (Tara Townsend Hays) of Lake Tahoe, NV, Mr. and Mrs. Tyler Anderson (Jessie Meadows Hays) of Salt Lake City, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Smith (First Lieutenant Scarlett Zoe Hays) of Fort Worth, TX, Samuel Jerome Hays Smith of Roanoke, and Lucy McCullough Hays Smith of Richmond VA.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 24 at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, WV with Rev. Matt Morrison officiating. Interment will be in the memorial grounds at Albert's Chapel, Sand Ridge, WV attended by family only.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the two churches that Zoe Powell loved and attended as a child and for most of her adult life, Albert's Chapel at Sand Ridge and Louisa Chapel at Arnoldsburg. |
