DRUG SNIFFING DOG DISCOVERS SUBSTANCES AT CALHOUN MIDDLE-HIGH SCHOOL

(10/15/2009)
A search for illegal substances using drug sniffing dogs was conducted last Thursday at Calhoun Middle-High School, according to superintendent Roger Propst.

"Probable cause for a search was present for two male students, grades 7 and 9," Propst said.

A drug dog belonging to Grantsville Police Chief Charles Stephens was used in the search, with assistance from a Calhoun Sheriff's Department deputy.

Propst said, "Unannounced visits by law enforcement K9 units are commonly used as a deterrent to prevent drug abuse by students. Calhoun Schools does not allow the dogs to have contact with the students."

Propst said "No drugs were discovered on anyone's persons." He was unable to verify the actual drugs discovered.

Thursday's visit is likely the first time in several years a drug sniffing dog discovered a substance, although there was a case a few years ago when a dog surrounded a car in the parking lot, concluded Propst.
