Mildred Bates, 92 - Parkersburg and Arizona

Mildred Bates, 92, of Parkersburg/Arizona went home to her Maker on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009.

Mildred was born on July 4, 1917 in Calhoun County, W.Va., to Fred W. and Arminta (Minty) Stump Burroughs. She attended Calhoun County High School in Grantsville, W.Va.

In 1937, Mildred married Thurl Kendall and daughter, Betty Louise, was born to that union. In 1970 Mildred married Donald H. Bates. After Don's death in 1972, Mildred moved to Parkersburg and purchased a home, where she continued to make delicious goodies for family and friends. She also had a green thumb and enjoyed designing her beautiful yard and flower beds.

In 2004, to recuperate from pneumonia, she moved to Sierra Vista, Ariz., to live with her daughter, Betty (Don) Newman, where she continued to live until her death.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Thurl (Abe) and Elton (Buck) Burroughs; and her sister, Vista Gainer.

In addition to Betty and Don, those left to mourn her passing are Judith (Leon) Hupp of Parkersburg; grandchildren, Annette (Todd) Kirk of Washington, W.Va., Michael (Becky) Hupp of Little Rock, Ark., Barry Hupp of Seminole, Okla., Leigh Ann (Chris) Hupp of Parkersburg, Tim Ayers of Sierra Vista; Lonnie Newman of Colville, Wash., Lucille (Lynn) Korn of San Angelo, Texas, Dale (Vaughn) Newman of Springerville, Ariz., and Judith (Pat) Carson of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; 20 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Jean (Paul) Heinl of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Frank Gainer of Parkersburg.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Mildred's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Camden Avenue Church of Christ, 2900 Camden Avenue, Parkersburg, followed by a short graveside service at 3 p.m. at the Collins Community Cemetery in Stumptown, W.Va.

The family respectively requests donations to Valor Hospice Care, 500 E. Fry Blvd., Sierra Vista, AZ 85635.

Arrangements are being handled by Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista and Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg.
