CALHOUN COUNTY SCHOOLS GUIDELINES FOR VIEWING
PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH TO STUDENTS SEPTEMBER 8, 2009

All school systems in America have been notified that the President of the United States will speak to the students of the country on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 12-noon.

The U.S. Department of Education has provided sample lesson plans for teachers to use with the showing of this speech. The West Virginia State Superintendent of Schools has indicated that viewing of this speech is voluntary and is at the discretion of the local school system.

This has become somewhat controversial in the present national political environment and has caused consternation on the part of some parents who fear their children might be exposed to partisan political views in a "captive" environment.

With this in mind, the following guidelines are to be followed relating to the viewing of this address.

• At Calhoun Middle High School, those students in Social Studies classes at 1:00 p.m. on that day, should have the opportunity to view the speech live. All other classes will proceed as normal and those students will have the opportunity to view the speech in an upcoming Social Studies class. The suggested lesson plans are also optional; teachers should use their discretion in this regard.

• At Arnoldsburg and Pleasant Hill Elementary Schools, the speech will be made available to the students at 1:00 p.m. since these schools are a self-contained setting. Teachers will adjust their schedules that day to accommodate Social Studies at that time. As is the case at CM/HS, the use of the suggested lesson plans is discretionary.

• In all schools the viewing of this speech is optional. Should a parent not want his/her child to view the speech, arrangements will be made for alternate supervised settings for these students.
